Long Island Catholic diocese sues to end Child Victims Act

The Rockville Centre Catholic diocese on Long Island sued to challenge the constitutionality of New York’s Child Victims Act, the year-long legislation that opens the legal recourse door for those who say they were sexually abused.

Jennifer Freeman, of New York-based Marsh Law, thinks this effort will fail.

“This is absurd. There’s no constitutional right to a statue of limitations,” Freeman said. “The Child Victims Act was put into place to help end the plague of child sex abuse in New York.”

For attorneys like Freeman the anonymity judgment was another step in the right direction for not only her clients, but for ending the history of child abuse cover-ups. 

“The church can no longer shut children up,” Freeman said.
