BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — Three women filed a lawsuit today in New Court, Kings County, alleging that fertility specialist Dr. Richard V. Grazi sexually abused them under the guise of medical examinations. The lawsuit, filed by Marsh Law Firm PLLC under New York City’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Act, also names Maimonides Medical Center and Genesis Fertility & Reproductive Medicine, P.C. as defendants.
The plaintiffs, identified in the complaint as Jane Doe 1, Jane Doe 2, and Jane Doe 3, allege that the abuse occurred in Brooklyn when they were young women seeking medical care and fertility treatment. According to the complaint, Dr. Grazi exploited his position of trust and medical authority to subject patients to nonconsensual touching, digital penetration, and examinations that served no legitimate medical purpose. The complaint further alleges that examinations were conducted without gloves, without a chaperone, and without appropriate medical staff present.
The lawsuit also alleges that Maimonides Medical Center and Genesis Fertility enabled the abuse by providing Dr. Grazi with the institutional authority, facilities, staff, and professional standing through which he gained access to patients. The complaint contends that the institutions knew or should have known of concerning conduct years earlier and cites a 2005 verified complaint filed by former physician Dr. Susan M. Lobel alleging “inappropriate behavior with female patients and staff.”
“Our clients went to a fertility doctor at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives, trusting him to care for them,” said Helene M. Weiss, partner at Marsh Law Firm PLLC. “Instead, he used medical care as cover for sexual abuse, and the institutions around him failed to protect them. These women are coming forward because silence protects abusers, not victims.”
The plaintiffs are asking the court for permission to proceed anonymously because of the highly sensitive nature of the allegations and the emotional harm that public disclosure would cause.
“Accountability shouldn’t cost a survivor her privacy, no matter how powerful the doctor or the institutions behind him,” Weiss said.
The complaint seeks compensatory and punitive damages, injunctive and declaratory relief, attorneys’ fees and costs, and such other relief as the court deems just and proper.
