Kenneth McLaughlin – Knights of Columbus
Robert Austin – Knights of Columbus

Ken McLaughlin joined Boyd Council #326 Knights of Columbus in April 1946 and became involved with that organization’s youth program, the Father Duffy Squires Circle #186. He was Chief Counselor and Youth Director and served in that position from 1946 until 2004. McLaughlin also established himself as a basketball coach at the Knights of Columbus for the Fr. Duffy Squires on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx where he systematically sexually abused hundreds of neighborhood boys involved in the KOC youth program. Robert Austin was a coach at “the Squires” who also reportedly engaged in sexual abuse.

Jack Lazeroff – Democrat and Chronicle

Jack Lazeroff was in his 40s when he left a career in banking and found work overseeing newspaper carriers for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in Brighton and later, according to former Gannett employees who worked with him, in Irondequoit and Charlotte. Five middle-aged men, all former Democrat and Chronicle paperboys in Brighton in the early 1980s, claim that Lazeroff sexually abused them. One of the former paperboys, and the father of another, said they each complained to an employee of the newspaper. The former head of personnel at the bank where Lazeroff previously worked, the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Rochester which is now owned by HSBC, said he was fired from there for molesting young male employees.

Leonard W. Durante – Camp Lakota 

On July 17, 2019  New York State Police arrested Leonard W. Durante, age 35 of Mamakating, for Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors 1^st Degree, (felony), Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Coercion 2^nd (both misdemeanors).

The investigation determined that Mr. Durante, who was formerly employed as an Assistant Director of a summer camp, Camp Lakota in Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, New York, was corresponding via “Snap Chat” with a 16 year old male counselor from the camp. He solicited naked pictures from the victim and requested to see the victim naked in person.

Ernie Lorch – Riverside Church

Lorch was once known as the most powerful man in New York City basketball, a youth coach with deep ties to St. John’s and other schools who could get a player a college scholarship with a phone call or two. Lorch helped launch the Riverside Church Hawks in 1961 as an outreach program for underprivileged kids. Lorch’s program was known for decades as a high-class organization in an amateur basketball world filled with struggling community center teams and bandit street agents.

Lorch was hounded by sex abuse allegations for at least a decade. In 2002, the Daily News first reported that Lorch, a former Riverside Church deacon and an executive with the leveraged buyout firm Dyson-Kissner-Moran, was at the center of a sex-abuse investigation launched by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. New York prosecutors could not charge Lorch, in part because of statute of limitations issues.

Church officials barred Lorch from their Riverside Hawks basketball program, saying he could return once the matter was resolved. Since charges were never filed, Lorch remained in limbo for several years. He eventually split with the church and formed a new program, the Metro Hawks. Lorch died in 2012 at the age of 80.

Phoenix Central School District

In the 1970s, a child sex abuse ring was operating at the Phoenix Central School district outside of Syracuse, New York. During that time, three teachers – including James Middaugh and Ronald Smith – actively and openly preyed upon seventh and eighth grade girls at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School, and ninth grade girls at John C. Birdlebough High School.

Dr. David Blasczak (physician)

Between approximately 1990 and 2000, Blasczak hosted slumber parties at his home which were attended by minor females between the ages of seven and 12. On several occasions, Blasczak entered the room in which the minor females were sleeping, manipulated their clothing, and subjected them to sexual contact. This behavior typically consisted of Blasczak touching private areas of the minors’ bodies. He also took photographs of the minors’ exposed private areas when he was able to remove their clothing. Blasczak engaged in as many as 40 different incidents of such sexual conduct involving approximately eight to 10 minor females.

In his position at the Clyde Family Health Center, Blasczak took nude photographs of the genitals of multiple minor female patients at his medical office. He represented to parents that the photographs were needed for a “study,” which was neither sanctioned, funded, nor approved by any official medical body or learning institution. During a search of the defendant’s medical office, Homeland Security Special Agents discovered prepubescent child sex dolls, and novels that the defendant wrote concerning the sexual abuse of children.

Between September 1, 2015, and January 18, 2018, Blasczak subscribed to a website from his home that offered child pornography for purchase. He created an account and purchased images and videos of child pornography. The images and videos depicted prepubescent children engaged in sexual conduct with adults and other children, as well as prepubescent children, infants, and toddlers subjected to sexual abuse. In total, the defendant received and/or possessed approximately 2557 images and 78 videos depicting child pornography.

Dr. Gary Cohen (pediatrician)

A pediatrician who once served on the Suffolk County committee on child abuse was arraigned in 1990 on 75 counts relating to the sexual abuse of boys. Dr. Gary Cohen of Coram, New York pleaded guilty to numerous criminal charges involving the sexual abuse of boys including sodomy, sexual abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Stanley Rosenfeld & Rabbi Sheldon Schwartz (Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy)

Investigators received firsthand reports from twelve former SAR students, eleven boys and one girl, as well as one non-SAR student that support a finding that between 1974 and 1987, Rosenfeld engaged in acts of sexual abuse or other sexually inappropriate behavior. This finding was based in part on Rosenfeld’s admissions to the Ramaz School (“Ramaz”) that he inappropriately touched boys. The evidence demonstrated that Rosenfeld’s sexual misconduct became known to Rabbi Sheldon Schwartz (“Rabbi Schwartz”), then an SAR faculty member, when two former students separately disclosed to him that Rosenfeld had inappropriately touched them. The evidence further demonstrates that Rosenfeld’s sexual misconduct also became known to former SAR Principal Rabbi Sheldon Chwat (“Rabbi Chwat”) when a former faculty member reported to him that she observed Rosenfeld touch a boy’s groin area in an office within the School. In addition to learning that Rabbi Schwartz was present at Rosenfeld’s home when the sexual abuse of students occurred, investigators received four reports that Rabbi Schwartz engaged in inappropriate behavior with students at SAR in the 1970s.

Stanley Rosenfeld, Richard Andron, and Albert Goetz (Ramaz)

Investigators found that Stanley Rosenfeld committed sexual abuse while employed at Ramaz. Investigators also discovered that at different times throughout Ramaz’s history, other adults affiliated with Ramaz also committed sexual misconduct of varying types and degrees or engaged in inappropriate relationships with students.

Diocese of Rockville Center

Brian McKeon

Twenty years before he was drummed out of the priesthood for molesting boys, the Rev. Brian McKeon told the pastor of his first church that he had acted “inappropriately” with a teenager. Nothing, however, was done. McKeon was not removed as a pastor until after a parent from The Church of the Good Shepherd in Holbrook complained to the diocese in June 1998, long after McKeon had left Holbrook. When the priest returned from a treatment center in Canada, he was reassigned to Nassau University Medical Center and allowed to continue performing occasional Masses at St. Anne’s in Garden City, which was his last parish, and as a fill-in priest at Mission Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Mattituck. In 25 years as a priest, McKeon served in parishes in Holbrook, East Northport, Garden City and Mattituck. Diocesan spokesman Sean Dolan said Bishop William Murphy removed McKeon from active ministry in fall 2001 following accusations he had sexually molested boys. The pope laicized, or permanently removed, McKeon from the priesthood two years later. McKeon died in 2009.

Diocese of Brooklyn

Romano J. Ferraro

Romano Ferraro was arraigned in 2002 on charges of child rape and abuse. He was formally removed from ministry in 1988 and was convicted in 2004 of child sexual assault for raping a young boy in the 1970s, according to the New York Times. As the New York Times reported, Ferraro is “believed to have been one of the most prolific priest pedophiles on the Eastern Seaboard.” Ferraro is said to have been transferred within and between Diocese, including the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He has also served as a priest in New Jersey and Missouri, as well as in Florida and the Philippines. Ferraro has been laicized.

James T. Smith

Father Smith was placed on administrative leave in 2002 after allegations that he had sexually abused minors. Prior to his leave, Smith reportedly held a part-time job in the domestic violence unit of the Queen’s District Attorney’s Office. A 2003 lawsuit accused Smith of molesting multiple minors, including a girl at Our Lady of Grace Church in Howard Beach during the late 1950s and early 1960s, as well as a boy at Holy Trinity Parish Church in Whitestone during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It has been reported that more than two dozen people have made similar complaints against Smith.

From News Reports

George Puello, a high-profile figure in Westchester theater, was a brother with the Society of Don Bosco, Order of Salesians, between 1969 and 1971, when the abuse was alleged to have occurred.

Thomas Kreiser was serving at St. Joseph’s parish when he allegedly improperly touched a young girl. He previously worked at St. Patrick’s Church in Yorktown and St. Gregory Barbarigo Church in Garnerville.

James Liguori, executive director of Fordham’s Westchester campus, who previously was president of Iona College, stepped down one day after a lawsuit alleged that he sexually abused a boy who claimed Liguori molested him in 1969 at the Cardinal Farley Military Academy in Dutchess County, which was run by the Christian Brothers.

The Rev. William Burke, who worked at the Marian Shrine in Stony Point, was accused in a lawsuit of molesting a 14-year-old boy in 1987 at a boarding school in Tampa, Florida.

The Rev. Patrick Quigley was convicted of sexual misconduct. He pleaded guilty in December 1994 to a misdemeanor charge after admitting he had offered several young boys money for sex in Haverstraw village. He was sentenced to probation and the archdiocese sent him to a rehabilitation center for alcoholism in Maryland.

Rev. Gary Mead, a Catholic priest from Millwood assigned to St. Gregory Barbarigo parish in Garnerville fondled an undercover police officer and was charged with forcible touching. He was previously assigned to St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers Falls and, in the late 1990s, was parochial vicar at Holy Family parish in New Rochelle.

Rev. Leo Pelkington, who spent 3 1/2 years at Holy Name of Jesus Church before leaving in August 1998, was arrested by police in Connecticut on charges that he fondled two boys in their home.

Dominic Bokulich (DOB 05/07/73) of 81 Hilltop Road, Monticello, New York, formerly resident at St. Felix Friary, 15 Trinity Place, Yonkers, New York, was sentenced to seven years in state prison on his guilty plea to one count of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, one count of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the Second Degree, both class “D” Felonies and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, class “A” Misdemeanors. Between November 2005 and June 2007 Bokulich, also known as Brother Leopold, sexually abused four boys between the ages of four and 14. Some of the incidents took place in Yonkers. Bokulich assaulted the boys both at their home, where he did handiwork for the family, and at a retreat location operated by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

Patrick Sexton, a former priest accused of sexually assaulting students while teaching in Brooklyn in the 1980s, was already teaching at Sacred Heart School in Mount Vernon in 1990 when Education Through Music Inc. of Manhattan began its collaboration with the school’s music program. He was under investigation after allegations surfaced that he fondled choirboys at a Brooklyn parochial school has been teaching at two Catholic elementary schools in Westchester for up to 10 years. He also taught at Corpus Christi School in Port Chester and underwent psychological counseling as early as 1983 after a molestation complaint, church officials said. He also worked at St. Cecilia’s School in Brooklyn in the 1980s.

Four plaintiffs, according to court papers, were recruited to the Salesian Junior Seminary in Goshen, Orange County by the Rev. Frank Nugent, who is also listed as a defendant. The Salesians reached a settlement in 1998 with a Massachusetts woman who charged that she and her two brothers were sexually abused by Nugent. The plaintiffs also charge that they were sexually abused by a former Salesian brother, George Puello, often in their beds at the seminary.

A former Westchester priest was arrested for having sexual relations with a young child, according to police. Joseph Faraone assaulted a child who may have had a mental disability. Faraone spent time at the Church of St. Patrick in Yorktown and St. Francis of Assisi in Mount Kisco.

The Rev. Dozia Wilson was defrocked in 1993. He worked as the spiritual adviser at a home for troubled youths at St. Christopher’s Residential Treatment Center in Dobbs Ferry. He was reassigned from St. Ann’s Church in Albany after parents at Sacred Heart parish complained that the priest had sex with two boys at a motel. Wilson was later reassigned to St. Mary’s in Hudson. Wilson was also a chaplain at the Columbia County jail. He was finally removed him from ministry in 1990 because of more complaints about his alleged behavior with young boys.

A former Pearl River priest and Westchester Catholic school leader accused of sexual abuse was permanently removed from his ministry by the Archdiocese of New York. Monsignor John O’Keefe, who served for more than a decade as president at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, was suspended from St. Margaret of Antioch Parish in Pearl River after he was accused of sexually abusing a minor on two occasions — in New York and Virginia.

Rabbi Lyle Kamlet was arrested by federal authorities on charges he allegedly possessed and received child pornography. Kamlet formerly worked at the Westchester Day School in Mamaroneck.

Diocese of New York

Gennaro “Father Jerry” Gentile, a former pastor of Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton-on-Hudson. He was accused of abuse or improper sexual behavior by at least five families or individuals. Among the accusers, two adult men said they fought off sexual attacks by Gentile during the 1970s in Wappingers Falls and Poughkeepsie. Deacon Albert Mazza was also removed from ministry in 2013.

Lawrence Inzeo, a former pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in West Harrison. Arthur Manzione, a former deacon and associate secretary for education for the archdiocese. He was also on staff at St. Anthony of Padua Church when he was removed from ministry in August 2003. Inzeo and Manzione both were accused of abusing a minor two decades ago, when both were assigned to Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. The archdiocese has said the allegations against them were not related.

• Daniel Calabrese, a former priest at St. Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie. He was convicted in 1992 of sodomizing a teenage boy in Dutchess County and was removed from ministry. In recent years, he has been living in New Mexico.
  
• David Carson, a former priest on Staten Island and at St. Paul’s Church in Congers. He has been out of ministry for several years. No accusations against him have been made public.
  
• Kenneth Jesselli, a former pastor of Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton-on-Hudson. He was removed from ministry in April 2002, but any allegations against him have not been made public. Jesselli’s predecessor at Holy Name of Mary, the Rev. Gennaro Gentile, has also been removed from ministry because of allegations of abuse, but his case has not yet been decided by the Vatican.
  
• Ralph LaBelle, a former pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Putnam Lake. He was removed in April 2002 after allegations surfaced of a nonsexual but inappropriate relationship with a teenage boy.
  
• Patrick Quigley, a former associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Stony Point. He pleaded guilty in December 1994 to a misdemeanor charge after admitting he had offered to pay several boys for sex in Haverstraw village. He was removed from ministry and sent for psychiatric treatment.
  
• Francis Stinner, a former pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville. Despite insisting on his innocence, he left the parish in 1997 after several men accused him of abusing them decades before in Orange County. At the time, the archdiocese acknowledged paying for therapy, college and a new car for Stinner’s main accuser. Stinner continued to celebrate Mass at several local parishes until the archdiocese told him to stop in 2002.

John Lennon, the former pastor at St. John the Baptist in Yonkers

John Gallant was removed from ministry in 2002. He was pastor of St. Joan of Arc Church in Sloatsburg and acknowledged having a past affair with a young woman. The woman said she was a 16-year-old student of his when the priest initiated a relationship in 1978.

Richard Gorman was ordained for the Archdiocese of New York in 1982. His first assignment was as an assistant at St. Barnabas in the Bronx. From there he spent three years at Stepinac High School in White Plains before joining the faculty of Spellman High in the Bronx where, from 1997 on, he was in residence. From 1997 to 2004 Gorman was Associate Director of the Department of Social Research for Catholic Charities, after which he is noted in the Official Catholic Directory to have been retired for several years. In the early 2000s he earned a law degree. Gorman served as a judge for the archdiocese’s Metropolitan Tribunal and, from 2010 to 2016, he was the Prison Apostolate director. Gorman was known for his community activism; for over twenty years he was chairman of Community Board 12 in the Bronx.

In mid-2015 a man reported to law enforcement and to the archdiocese that Gorman had sexually abused him when he was a 13-year-old St. Barnabas parishioner. The man said Gorman took him to a church facility in Westchester County, where the abuse took place. The investigations reportedly yielded several additional alleged victims and witnesses. Gorman denied the accusations, which the archdiocese deemed “credible but not yet substantiated.” He was placed on leave in January 2016.

The following archdiocesan clergy have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.¹ For purposes of this list, “credibly accused” means that archdiocesan officials have determined, following a review of available and accessible files, that one or more of the following exists:

• the archdiocesan Review Board found the allegation to be credible and substantiated;
• the archdiocesan Review Board found the allegation to be credible and substantiated;
• the accused admitted the allegation;
• the accused was convicted of a crime in connection with the allegation; or

¹ Father Christopher Pliauplis, an archdiocesan priest who had been accused of sexually abusing a minor, was found not guilty by an ecclesiastical court on December 14, 2007. Two archdiocesan clergy, Father James McLucas and Deacon James Rush, were accused of inappropriate sexual conduct following assignments in the Diocese of Harrisburg, in Pennsylvania. In Father McLucas’ case, the victim stated in a court filing that she was not a minor when the sexual activity occurred. Deacon Rush was determined by the Diocese of Harrisburg not to have sexually abused a minor. Nonetheless, both men were suspended and remain out of ministry.

• The clergy on the following list had already died or left ministry when the claims about them were made to the IRCP.  As such, these clergy did not have an opportunity to respond to the allegations made about them or provide a defense. 
• While the IRCP is a widely praised program which is being emulated across the country, it is a compensatory program and not an adjudicatory body.  As such, it is not required to adhere to the same standards as a court of law.
• A determination by the IRCP that a claim is eligible for compensation is not equivalent to a finding by a judge or jury that a clergy member is liable for sexual abuse of a minor under civil or criminal law.

Diocese of Buffalo

James Cotter

In 2007, the Buffalo News reported that the Diocese of Buffalo transferred Cotter to San Diego, where he then allegedly molested a young boy. A lawsuit was filed in California and accused the Diocese of Buffalo of knowing that Cotter was a pedophile but choosing to transfer him to San Diego in 1978 as part of an arranged “early retirement.” The Diocese of Buffalo has denied knowing of prior accusations against Cotter and stated that they first learned of an accusation against the priest in the mid-1990s.

Dozia Wilson

Ordained in 1972
Although Dozia Wilson was ordained in the Diocese of Albany, he served in the Boston area in the 1970s after he was caught sexually abusing two boys in a motel. Wilson was moved to Boston where he was soon discovered sexually abusing two teenage boys who lived with him in the rectory. He was sent to the House of Affirmation treatment center in 1978. Wilson returned to the Diocese of Albany in 1980. It wasn’t until 1993 that Wilson was laisized. He then went to work for St. Christopher's Inc. residential treatment facility for children in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

In 1983, Jungers was actively involved in Boy Scouts of Canada, and was placed in the BSA’s Ineligible Volunteer File after he allegedly pled guilty to molesting two young boys during a campout at his home. He was an Anglican priest at the time and was serving as the Boy Scouts’ District Chaplain. In 1987, Junger registered for Scouting in Cooperstown, New York, and in 1989 he registered for Scouting in Fly Creek, New York where he served as Unit Commissioner. Years later, in 1991, Jungers was again removed from Scouting based on the 1983 molestation incidents and again placed in the BSA’s Ineligible Volunteer File.

Later, in 1991, it was discovered that Mooney was registered as a Merit Badge Counselor with the Suffolk County Council.
